The Board of the York Harbor Reading Room has been busy working to create a new charitable foundation – The York Harbor Reading Room Foundation – a 501 c 3 organization that will be able to receive charitable gifts to create an endowment to preserve the historic Clubhouse building. As the building will be 100 years old this summer, an endowment is believed the best birthday present possible.
The Reading Room Club House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Foundation was incorporated with the State of Maine on July 29, 2009. It is a new public charity, an entity that is separate from the Reading Room. A partnership with an independent group that can oversee the expenses to maintain the historic building was formed. That partner is the Old York Historical Society. That agreement was signed on October 9, 2009. The IRS approved the 501 c 3 status of the Foundation on March 17, 2010.
The Foundation's purpose is to maintain the historic Clubhouse and its goal is to raise funds to establish an endowment whose income will pay for that maintenance.
